October 12-13 Student Issue Forum Aims To Engage African-American Youth In Shaping Community Policy

Students Surveyed Name President Clinton Most Admired Political Leader

Washington, DC — African-American youth attending Atlanta-area Historically Black Colleges and Universities are the focal points for a new initiative to engage African-American youth in shaping community policy to be launched October 12 at Clark Atlanta University. Collaborating on the initiative are the Southeast Community Policy and Leadership Forum of the Center for Policy Alternatives (CPA); the Southern Center for Studies in Public Policy; and the Brisbane Institute. Two hundred students from Morehouse College, Spelman College, Morris Brown College, Fort Valley State University and Clark Atlanta University are expected to participate.

CPA, through its 1996-97 Youth Voices project and survey, found American 18-24 year olds to be concerned about important issues and ready to work where they can make a difference, but turned off by “politics as usual.” Similar attitudes are reflected in a current pre-conference survey of college students who will participate in the forum. In an open-ended question students identified President Clinton, retired General Colin Powell, the Reverend Jesse Jackson, and U.S. Senator Maxine Waters, in that order, as the political leaders they most admire.

U.S. Representative John Lewis (D-GA) is the conference keynote speaker on October 12. On October 13, six state legislators will lead policy discussions in four major areas: economic development, law, health issues and human services. The six are Georgia Senators Donzella James and Diane Harvey Johnson; Georgia Representatives Bob Holmes and Henrietta Turnquest; Texas Representative Dawnna Dukes; and Wisconsin Representative Antonio Riley.
