Why Young People Didn’t Vote In the November 1996 Elections

Washington, DC — The Center for Policy Alternatives (CPA) and Who Cares magazine, joint partners of the Youth Voices project, will co-host a forum discussion and analysis of recent low voter turnout among 18-24 year-olds on Thursday, February 13, at the Washington Plaza Hotel.

Invited speakers and panelists include:

Linda Tarr-Whelan, Center for Policy Alternatives (CPA)
Therese Heliczer, Youth Vote, ’96
Celinda Lake, Lake Research
Kellyanne Fitzpatrick, CNN and the Polling Co.
Jaime Uzeta, Rock the Vote
Alison McLaurin, Democratic National Committee
Heather McLeod, Who Cares magazine (moderator)
Panelists will explore possible reasons for low youth voter turnout, barriers and obstacles to increasing citizen participation in young people and steps organizers can take next time to increase local and national election involvement. They also will examine Get Out the Vote (GOTV) campaigns for 1996 and 2000, and what initiatives such as this mean for the future of youth organizing.

Youth Voices is a joint initiative of the Center for Policy Alternatives (CPA) and Who Cares magazine and centers on a 1996 national survey which delved into the issues and ideas of Generation X. The survey uncovered a motivated and goal-oriented cross-section of the population that defied the popular characterization as “slackers.”

Through a series of briefings in cities across the U.S., Youth Voices is bringing the message of activism and involvement to young citizens of this country. The briefing is supported by a grant from the Carnegie Corporation; the Youth Voices project was funded by the Ford Foundation.
