GORE, CAMPBELL, HOLDEN AND MORELLA TO BE HONORED AT CPA’S 1997 LEADERSHIP AWARDS CELEBRATION, THURSDAY, MAY 29
Washington, DC — Vice President Al Gore leads an impressive list of federal, state and local leaders to be recognized by the Center for Policy Alternatives (CPA) on May 29 for their demonstrated commitments to responsive government and consensus-building approaches to leadership for the future.
Vice President Gore will receive the Arthur S. Flemming Leadership Award, given this year in honor of Presidential Medal of Freedom winner Arthur S. Flemming. Atlanta Mayor Bill Campbell, Missouri State Treasurer Bob Holden and U.S. Representative Connie Morella will be presented CPA Pathfinder Awards.
Vice President Gore’s initiatives in re-inventing government, environmental issues and workplace policies that benefit working families and increase productivity are providing strong foundations to build leadership for the future. Similarly, Dr. Arthur Flemming’s lifetime of work for federal administrations was characterized by practical policies that help people. Flemming served actively as a member of CPA’s Board of Directors from 1988 until his death in 1996. CPA’s Flemming Fellows Leadership Institute helps newly elected state officials to incorporate their values into public service and build solutions across traditional boundaries. There are over 100 Flemming Fellows from 48 states; the 35 elected leaders comprising the third class of Flemming Fellows also will be honored at the celebration.
CPA’s Pathfinder recipients have distinguished themselves through their thoughtful solutions to society’s most intractable challenges. Mayor Campbell guided Atlanta to being one of only six U.S. cities to be designated as federal Empowerment Zones, spurring investment and development in the inner city. Treasurer Holden, a 1994 Flemming Fellow, engineered a series of participatory meetings to bring the state budgetary process closer to Missourians. Congresswoman Morella has championed women’s economic equity and health, and works to fight domestic violence and support AIDS research for women.
Previous award recipients include First Lady Hillary Rodham Clinton, who received last year’s Leadership Award, and Lifetime Achievement Award recipients Keith Geiger, President of the National Education Association, and Barbara Roberts, former Governor of Oregon. Past Pathfinder honorees include U.S. Rep. Maxine Waters, then-Louisiana Treasurer Mary Landrieu, Massachusetts Treasurer
Joseph D. Malone and Detroit Mayor Dennis Archer.
