CPA Holds First Eleanor Roosevelt Global Leadership Institute Retreat

In April, CPA held its first Global Leadership Retreat, which brought together legislators and foreign policy experts who participated in discussions that covered a range of subjects both local and global in nature. State legislators heard informative talks by former public officials such as UNICEF Director Carol Bellamy, Priscilla Lewis of the Rockefeller Brothers Fund who discussed issues related to the global interdependence of nations, and Joyce Foundation President Paula DiPerna who gave a thought-provoking presentation on Chile. The 2001 fellows are now developing an action plan in preparation for October’s international retreat in Santiago, Chile.

"The presentations and interactions with group members at the first retreat helped me think about what we as legislators need to do to face the challenge of globalization. I will apply what I have learned to broaden and enhance my work as a legislator to include a better global perspective and work towards exploring programs and projects with other countries. We must play a responsible role in the world arena. International issues affect all of our states."

—Rep. Phyllis Gutierrez Kenney (WA)

Recruitment for the 2002 Eleanor Roosevelt Global Leadership Fellows will begin in July. Contact Carolina Zumaran-Jones at (202) 956-5155 or [email protected] for an application.
