CPA Changemakers

Vice President – Leadership

This summer brought major changes at CPA – exciting new programs underway and talented new leaders in every program area. And celebration mixed with sadness as these long-time staff members – Darold Johnson, Anne Mosle and Delba Riddick – leave to take on new challenges.

Anne Mosle celebrated the arrival of her daughter Elliot – and a new career step for her. Always the entrepreneur, Anne launched the Washington Area Women’s Foundation 18 months ago to tap the wealth of women donors in the DC area to support women community builders and their efforts in the most vulnerable neighborhoods in our nation’s Capital. Always the builder, Anne is now moving from her leadership role at CPA to serve as President of the Foundation and lead this vitally important institution. We’re delighted to announce that Anne will be a CPA Senior Fellow and continue to be actively engaged with many of the programs she helped to build at CPA. She will also be a co-chair of CPA’s Eleanor Roosevelt Global Institute.

We’re also delighted to announce an exciting new member of CPA’s senior team who will take over the helm from Anne. Jane Gruenebaum, CPA’s new Vice President for Leadership, brings stature as well as creativity and passion to building CPA’s leadership and women’s programs. Jane is a hands-on expert in nonprofit management and organizational development. Most recently Jane was Executive Director of the League of Women Voters USA and the League of Women Voters’ Education Fund. Prior to that she organized and led executive education seminars on public policy issues for corporate and government executives from the U.S. and abroad at The Brookings Institution’s Center for Public Policy Education. Jane has also served in many positions of leadership, as a strategist, fundraiser and advocate for the National Nuclear Weapons Freeze Campaign and the National Abortion Federation. Jane taught political science courses at Sarah Lawrence College and Barnard College/Columbia University. She holds a Ph.D. from Columbia University in Political Science and a Master of Science in Politics from the London School of Economics and Political Science.

Director – Northeast Policy Leaders Forum

This summer, we launched our newest program to support and network policy makers and organizations in the 10 states from New England to Pennsylvania – CPA’s Northwest Policy Leaders Forum. Bettye Jo Pakulis joins CPA as the Northeast Forum’s dynamic new Director. “Bettye Jo brings a wealth of skills to CPA. She has a deep commitment to progressive values and a long history of working in legislative and in constituency offices. She has the kind of organizing skills and positive energy needed to pull a diverse network of legislators together in the Northeast,” says Miles Rapoport, Director of Democracy Works and CPA Board member. Prior to joining CPA, Bettye Jo served as Assistant to Connecticut State Treasurer Denise Nappier for Policy and Program Development. She was Director of the Capitol Office for former Secretary of State Miles Rapoport and served as legislative staff for the Government Administration and Elections Committee in the Connecticut General Assembly. Bettye Jo has also been involved in local government as Registrar of Voters of Tolland, Connecticut. A longtime activist, she serves on the NARAL PAC Board. Bettye Jo holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Political Science from the University of Connecticut.

Director – Southeast Policy Leaders Forum

Changes for Darold Johnson included a family move to Ohio this year. Darold launched CPA’s Southeast Policy Leaders Forum, and as Director developed trainings on policy, strategy, message and media skills, and leadership that helped grow a strong network of African American state legislators committed to community solutions. He also played a key role connecting policymakers and community organizations across the region and engaging students at historically black colleges and universities. All of us at CPA will miss his wise counsel.

Tracie PoughDarold’s talented successor as Southeast Director, Tracie Pough, will continue this strong focus on African American leaders and expand CPA’s Southeast activities to other legislators to help strengthen progressive efforts for change in the region.

Tracie knows her way around a legislature. Most recently, she served as a legislative analyst for the Florida House of Representatives where she was responsible for analyzing, tracking and developing public policy issues and legislation related to Criminal and Civil Justice. “Tracie did a great job in the Florida legislature. She will be a positive addition to CPA’s regional team. I’m sure my colleagues will be pleased to work with her,” affirmed Florida Representative and CPA Board Member Tony Hill. Tracie also served as a program administrator and management consultant for Florida’s Department of Juvenile Justice. Previously, Tracie has worked with Florida State University’s, Office of Minority Academic Programs where she developed and implemented outreach programs to increase minority enrollment. She holds a Master in Public Administration from Florida State University and a Bachelor of Arts in Social Science from Rollins College.

Celebrating Delba Riddick

In September, CPA staff, Board and friends gathered to celebrate Delba Riddick’s countless contributions to CPA during her 7-year tenure as Executive Vice President and COO and – with more than a few tears – her new role as Executive Vice President of Eureka Communities. “Linda and I have both been blessed to have Delba as a partner,” said Ann Beaudry. “From management excellence, to confidant and coach, to troubleshooter, to inspiring leader, and most of all, to friend, Delba has brought grace and passion to the myriad ways she’s help build CPA.”

Rather than miss Delba, we are already at work figuring out ways to continue to work together. This is an easy task given the synergy between Eureka’s leadership training and network building among Executive Directors of community development-focused nonprofit organizations and CPA’s policy leaders – and the fact that their office is just down the street from us. We know Delba would love to hear from you. Eureka Communities is at 1601 Connecticut Avenue, NW, Washington, DC. (202) 332-2070.
