Defining the Modern Progressive Agenda

CPA’s Summit On The States Focused On Investing In A Stronger, Healthier Economy

More than 200 state legislators and policy activists gathered in Washington for CPA’s Annual Summit on the States, December 2-5, to discuss strategies for implementing progressive solutions across the states. Participants engaged in more than twenty small working groups, led by legislators and other policy experts. Each session considered policy model legislation, and developed strategies and messages for moving these issues in their own states. Legislators returned home armed with innovative ideas for their 2000 sessions on issues as diverse as health, housing, employment security, privatization, consumers’ rights, education, elder care and gun violence.

Leading national pollsters Linda Divall, President of American Viewpoint (pictured) and Celinda Lake, President of Lake, Snell, Perry, gave a bipartisan presentation on public opinion and the progressive agenda. They emphasized the need to frame issues in terms of values in order to be successful and resonate with the public.

Florida State Representative Tony Hill and CPA Board Member, spoke passionately about "People’s Voices: A Mandate for Change" at the closing Plenary.

Virginia Delegate Viola Baskerville (Flemming Fellow `99) spoke at the
Summit’s Opening Plenary on "The Modern Progressive Agenda."
