1999 CPA Annual Dinner Brings State Leaders to Washington

CPA’s 1999 Annual Dinner, State Leaders Strengthening Our Democracy, brought over 300 state elected officials, community advocates, labor representatives, corporate partners and other friends to the National Press Club in June to honor progressive leaders North Carolina state Representative Dan Blue, partners Joe Duffey and Ann Wexler and AFL-CIO Executive Vice President Linda Chavez-Thompson.

"For a full generation, CPA has been showing America all the ways that state governments can be creative and humane and decent," said Pathfinder Award recipient Chavez-Thompson. "CPA breathes new life into a wonderful tradition for our states, to the ideas of the old-time progressives and Justice Brandeis, who said that states could be `laboratories of democracy.’"

CPA also honored members of the 1999 Class of Flemming Fellows, shown at left with U.S. Rep. Grace Napolitano (Flemming Fellow `94) of California.
