Summit on the States

December 11-12, 1998
Washington, DC

As states prepare for 1999 legislative sessions, devolution presents both complex challenges and exciting opportunities for progressive leadership. Innovative ideas and bold initiatives to meet these challenges frame the ambitious agenda for CPA’s 1998 Summit on the States — to be held in Washington, DC, December 11-12.

Small, interactive working sessions will give legislators an opportunity to hear from policy experts, connect with community and national leaders and, most importantly, learn from one another. Sessions will cover substance, strategy and messages on major issues facing the states, including:

  • Health Care for Underserved Communities
  • Affirmative Action
  • Education and Job Training for the 21st Century
  • Privatization of Public Services
  • Utility Deregulation
  • A Women-led Economic Agenda
  • Evaluating Welfare Reform
  • Who’s for Kids and Who’s Just Kidding?
  • State Budgets: Investments and Progressive Tax Reform
  • Campaign Finance
  • State Collaboration on Revitalizing Communities
A bipartisan panel of polling experts will suggest strategies to actively engage the public in these vital policy debates.
