State legislators gathered in North Carolina at an
October Community Policy and Leadership Forum (CPLF) to
develop
new strategies to promote children’s health care in
the southeastern U.S. CPA’s Children’s Health Care
Issues Roundtable brought legislators and officials
from Mississippi to Maryland together with
representatives from the Children’s Defense Fund, the Center on
Budget and Policy Priorities, Families USA, and Georgetown University’s
Harrison Institute.
Legislators focused on how to improve health care for children of
the working poor, many of whom will be affected by proposed Medicaid
expansion and moves to tighten state welfare rolls. Roundtable participants
discussed not only how they can incorporate successful community
initiatives in their own states, but how to take these successes to the next level in
the children’s health arena by working with the insurance industry and medical
specialty fields.
