White House Policy Briefing for Flemming Fellows Held

A crucial part of successful public service at all levels of government is a willingness to "make the tough decisions no one else is willing to make"e;-this was the message to members of the third class of Flemming Fellows and CPA award recipients from Administration officials at a special May 29 White House policy briefing. Secretary of Transporation Rodney Slater; Maria Echaveste, White House Director of Public Liaison; Larry Haas, Associate Director of Communications for the Office of Management and Budget; and Lynn Cutler, White House Deputy Director of Intergovernmental Affairs and former CPA Board Member, briefed Flemming Fellows on federal welfare-to-work initiatives, education issues and other policy priorities to be addressed during this administration.
Speakers noted that policy solutions that work best are those that work across boundaries – physical boundaries such as state lines, and less obvious boundaries such as economic divisions.
Flemming Fellows also brought their ideas to the attention of White House representatives, including suggestios about incorporating the recent popularity of volunteerism into welfare reform and building educational opportunities.
