ALEC Launches New Round of Attacks on NEA and Its Affiliates; Pushes Legislation to Curtail Union Dues
and Political Activities
The long-time displeasure of the American Legislative
Exchange Council (ALEC) and the National Right To Work Committee toward
the National Education Association and its affiliates has surfaced again in
a new round of attacks published by ALEC as part of its campaign to
pass various forms of anti-union legislation.
"Don’t Rely on U.S. Congress
to End Misuse of Forced Union Dues" headlines the top story of the
March 21, 1997 issue of the Free Market
News, a publication of ALEC’s Commerce and Economic Development Task Force.
The article levels the usual gratuitous protests of union members’ rights
being stripped and laments that "despite the horrific stories, it
does not appear federal legislation is likely to become a reality," so "ALEC
is aggressively and proactively educating its members" and
"asking them to introduce our Labor Organizations Deductions Act in
state legislatures across the country."
Discordantly, ALEC’s Free Market
News carries a nifty disclaimer that "the stories are not intended
to promote or hinder the passage of any bill before Congress or any
state legislature."
