Urban Institute: Progress on Child Support Enforcement
by Harold Leibovitz, Communications Director of Assessing the New Federalism, The Urban Institute
Despite major investments in child support enforcement systems and adoption of many new policies designed to improve collection efforts, data from the last 20 years show a fairly flat rate of child support collections. But there is some progress.

Rates of collection for never-married women — who have grown from 18 to 45 percent of all single women with children — have increased dramatically, from only 5 percent to 18 percent. Rates of collection for divorced women have grown more slowly, from 36 percent to 43 percent.

Receipt of child support is critically important to families headed by single mothers struggling for economic self-sufficiency and security. To find out more about the status of child support enforcement over the past 20 years, contact Harold Leibovitz at the Urban Institute, [email protected].
