CPA 2000 Awards Dinner

The Courage to Lead

CPA’s Annual Awards Dinner held in June honored outstanding Americans who have been powerful forces in the resurgence of progressive public policy across the 50 states. CPA honored AFL-CIO President John Sweeney, Washington, D.C. Major Anthony Williams, Maine State Senator Chellie Pingree and Wisconsin State Representative Antonio Riley, who have worked passionately to ensure that the promise of the American dream is fulfilled for all. Also honored was the 2000 class of Flemming Fellows, the best and brightest new state legislators whose public policy ideals transcend the bounds of traditional politics.

Special Tribute to John Gardner

Wishes for a speedy recovery

John Gardner is the exemplar of leadership in public service. For more than forty years he has led by example and written the core curriculum for those who believe public services is a noble profession. John Gardner inspired the vision that became CPA’s Flemming Fellows Leadership Institute, which seeks to inculcate emerging state leaders with the insights and courage to follow their convictions in solving public problems. His work in creating Common Cause and Independent Sector, and building the Urban Coalition, has changed our world.
