CPA Launches Eleanor Roosevelt Global Leadership Institute

Building a network of globally minded state leaders who share common values

“The structure of world peace cannot be the work of one man, or one party, or one nation. It must be a peace which rests on the cooperative effort of the whole world.” – Eleanor Roosevelt

The Eleanor Roosevelt Global Leadership Institute is CPA’s newest leadership development initiative. The goal of the Institute’s program is to create and support a network of new leaders who have a more comprehensive vision of the intersection of global and local, a new vision of the U.S. role in the world community and a determination to use their knowledge and skills in innovative and practical ways. The Institute’s program is designed to help state legislators understand and navigate the complex and continually changing global interdependency of nations and to connect them with colleagues, at home and abroad, with whom they can maintain a lasting partnership.

In early 2001, the Global Leadership Institute will begin recruiting for its first class. The initial program will start with 12 candidates representing diverse geographic areas and political persuasions. The Institute will seek “rising stars” who are able to see beyond their immediate political or district agendas to the broader international context. Program participants will be leaders that have a unique ability to influence the political and policy debate.

Two retreats (one domestic and one international) will be held in 2001; both are designed to meet the dual purposes of creating relationships and enhancing understanding. In an immersion setting that highlights values and experiential elements, participants will be challenged to explore new modes of mediation, probe cross-cultural issues and examine domestic issues through an international lens.

Applications for the Eleanor Roosevelt Leadership Institute will be available at www.stateaction.org in January 2001. For more information about the Institute, contact Carolina Zumaran-Jones at (202) 956-5155 or [email protected]

Global Leadership Institute Spearheaded by Carolina Zumaran-Jones

Carolina Zumaran-JonesThe Eleanor Roosevelt Global Leadership Institute will be organized by Carolina Zumaran-Jones. Prior to coming to CPA, Carolina coordinated international programs at the League of Women Voters Education Fund, working with Latin American and African women leaders as well as numerous U.S. state and local Leagues. She coordinated international exchange activities and developed ways to best integrate the League’s domestic and international arms. Her ability to engage people was brought to bear in country assessments conducted on the League’s behalf in Guatemala and Chile. In both countries she interviewed activists, legislators, and non-governmental organization and was able to identify compatible local organizations as well as sound projects for the League.

Carolina has lived in multi-cultural settings for most of her life. She has worked for international development assistance organizations, international consulting firms, as well as non-governmental organizations. With over 15 years of experience in international work, she is able look at issues from different perspectives and understand their complexity in the context of differing institutional cultures. Carolina received a B.A. in French from Georgetown University in Washington, D.C.

Joe Leonard to Lead Flemming Fellows Leadership Institute

The Flemming Fellows program is at the very heart of what CPA is all about, and we’ve chosen someone who represents its highest ideals to lead this program as we build for the future. Joe Leonard has been both an architect and an organizer on CPA’s Southeast Policy Leaders Forum staff team for the past three years. In the Southeast, he has engaged African American leaders – from state legislators to community leaders to students at historically black universities and colleges – in developing effective policy strategies to strengthen families and communities. As those who have worked closely with him know, Joe brings to the Flemming program his own strong passion for building consensus among diverse constituencies, a purposeful commitment to bridging divides and breaking gridlock.

As Joe takes on the directorship of Flemming, he will work on expanding leadership training opportunities with the Southeast PLF and all of CPA’s regional networks.

We expect to be calling him “Dr. Leonard” before too long as Joe is nearing completion of his doctoral dissertation at Howard University on the history of the civil rights movement. Joe can be reached at (202) 956-5157 or [email protected].
